Bonnies Swim and Dive Will Honor Nine Seniors on Saturday

Saturday, Jan. 28 – Dive: 10:00 a.m. / Swim: 1:15 p.m.

The St. Bonaventure University swimming and diving team will end its dual-meet season with a matchup against Gannon in the Reilly Center Pool on Saturday, Jan. 28. Diving is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by swimmers competing at 1:15 p.m.
 
Prior to the swimming events, the Bonnies will honor their nine seniors. The five men seniors are Joshua Bannon, Tomas Botero, Nicholas Nakaya, Nicholas Torre, and Griffin Witte. For the women, Allison Lenda, Maria Mangini, Beth Thomas, and Mary Wilson will be recognized.
 
HONORARY ASSISTANT COACH
  • Head coach Mike Smiechowski has announced that youth swimmer Colt Matz will serve as an assistant coach for Saturday's meet.
  • A Portville, N.Y. native, Colt will shadow Coach Smiechowski and assistant coach Ethan Dale on the pool deck and will help them record splits.
 
SENIOR RECOGNITION
  • Allison Lenda: Allison is a four-year member of the swimming program. As a freshman she was a part of a pair relay victories for the Brown and White in the 400-freestyle relay versus Canisius and the 200-freestyle relay against Niagara. Her sophomore season she earned ninth and tenth places finishes at the A-10 Championships in the 200 and 400-freestyle relay, while also finishing second in the 100-backstroke against Binghamton. As a junior she collected four different top-three finishes individually in a two-week span to help the Bonnies earn rivalry wins against Canisius, Niagara and Binghamton. A member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in every year of her career, she is pursuing her degree in environmental studies.
  • Maria Mangini: Maria is a four-year member of the swimming program. In her freshman season she was a part of runner-up finishes in the 500-freestyle relay and the 1000-freestyle relay against Niagara, and the 400-medley relay in a win against Canisius. Her sophomore season included a fifth-place finish in the 200-freestyle against Binghamton, while as a junior she picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes against Canisius. She came in second for the 1000-freestyle in the season opener this year against Saint Francis as a senior. A member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in every year of her career, she is pursuing her degree in marketing.
  • Beth Thomas: Beth is a four-year member of the swimming program. As a freshman she swam to second place finishes in the 200-IM and 100-breaststroke at Niagara, while also earning fourth in the 200-backstroke against Binghamton. In her sophomore year she came in second in the 200-backstroke against the Bearcats, while coming in fourth in the 200-IM and 200-medley relay in that same meet. In her junior season she was able to earn a trio of runner-up finishes in the 100-breast, 200-back and 200-IM vs. Canisius and came in fourth in the 200-IM against Binghamton. A member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in every year of her career, she is pursuing her degree in psychology.
  • Mary Wilson: Mary has been a four-year member of the team, and as a freshman placed fourth in the 3-meter dive against Niagara. She also came in third in the 1-meter dive at the Justin Jenkins Memoria Invitational with a score of 167.15 and earned fourth in the 3-meter at the same event. She was victorious twice in her sophomore season, earning wins in the 1 and 3-meter dive against Niagara with scores 186.55 and 185.7 respectively. Her junior season was comprised of two fourth-place finishes and a fifth place, and just last weekend she finished runner-up in the 3-meter at Binghamton with a score of 212.18 as a senior. A member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in every year of her career, she is pursuing her degree in accounting.
  • Joshua Bannon: Josh is a four-year member of the swimming program. In his freshman season he placed fourth in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:16.39 against Binghamton and 10:11.60 against Canisius. At the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championships he finished 12th in the consolation final, touching the wall in a time of 15:56.69 in the mile. As a sophomore Josh was victorious in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:07.60 against Niagara. In the 2021 A-10 Championships he registered an 11th place finish, swimming a time of 3:59.60 in the 400-IM. Last year, Josh finished third in the 500-freestyle at Cornell with a time of 4:53.03. At A-10's he placed 10th at Atlantic 10 Championships with a time of 15:55.48 in the mile. He has been selected to the Atlantic 10 honor roll in all of these seasons. This season he notched a fourth-place finish against Canisius in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:26.99. Josh is working towards his degree in finance
  • Tomas Botero: Tomas is a year-year member of the swimming program. During his freshman season Tomas earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:14.79 at Niagara and 10:01.72 against Canisius. At the Atlantic 10 Championships in 2020 he finished eighth in the mile with a time of 15:50.05. Last season, Tomas Placed second in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:20.87 at Canisius. At A-10 Championships he finished 10th in the consolation final, swimming a time of 1:39.82. He has been selected to the Atlantic 10 honor roll in all of these seasons. This season he was a part of the 800-freestyle relay team that touched the wall in a time of 6:41.43 to shatter the meet record at the Magnus Cup. Also, he has registered a trio of third-place finishes in the 200-freestyle this year. Tomas is pursuing a degree in accounting.
  • Nicholas Nakaya: Nick is a four-year member of the swimming program. As a freshman he grabbed second place in the 100-breastroke with a time of 1:03.19 at Penn State, while also swimming a time of 2:17.43 to place third in the 200-breastroke at Colgate. During his sophomore season he earned a silver medal in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:15.32 at Atlantic 10 Championships. Last season, Nick was a member of the 400-medley relay team that earned a bronze medal at the A-10 Championships. Also, he won the Won the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:00.08 at Niagara. He has been selected to the Atlantic 10 honor roll in all of these seasons. This season he was a member of the 800-freestyle relay team that touched the wall in a time of 6:41.43 to shatter the meet record at the Magnus Cup. Also, he notched two event victories at the Colgate Invite. Nick is working towards a degree in international studies.
  • Nicholas Torre: Nick is a four-year member of the swimming program.  In his freshman year he was a member of the third-place 400-freestyle relay at Colgate, while also registering a pair of fourth-place finishes at Penn State. During the 2020-21 season Nick was a part of the victorious 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.24 against Niagara. Last season, he posted a pair of sixth-place finishes at Canisius. He has been selected to the Atlantic 10 honor roll in all of these seasons. This season he was a member of the 200-freestyle relay team that placed third with a time of 1:26.51 against Cornell. Nick is pursuing a degree in sports management.
  • Griffin Witte: Griffin is a four-year member of the swimming program. During his freshman season he was a member of the second-place 200-medley relay that finished with a time of 1:40.63 at Niagara. Also, in his first year he swam a time of 57.99 to take fourth in the 100-backstroke at Penn State. As a sophomore Griffin was a part of the 200-medley relay team that placed second at Binghamton with a time 1:35.52. Last season, he swam a time of swam a time of 54.90 to finish second in the 100-backstroke at Canisius. He has been selected to the Atlantic 10 honor roll in all of these seasons. This year he delivered a fourth-place finish in the 100-backstroke with a time of 54.20 at the Colgate Invite. Griffin is working towards a degree in physical education.
 
WOMEN'S NOTES
  • The women narrowly dropped a 121-120 decision at Binghamton this past Saturday.
  • Sophomore Ellie Kraus notched two individual victories and led the way for the Bonnies 200-freestyle relay team. She was joined by Kathryn Beyer, Amy O'Rourke, and Rylie Foley in the relay.
  • Fellow sophomore Silvana Cabrera earned two event wins for the Brown and White.
  • In the 50-freestyle Halle Myers picked up a victory with a time of 24.05, while O'Rourke finished right behind her with a time of 24.80.
  • Allison Lenda was victorious in the 100-backstroke, touching the wall in a time of 58.61. Teammate Eylul Alli claimed second place in the event (59.08).
  • In diving action Mary Wilson finished runner-up in the three-meter dive, while Kylie McKee earned a second-place finish in the one-meter dive.
 
MEN'S NOTES
  • The men fell by a score of 148-95 against the Bearcats.
  • Freshman Ben Giera picked up a pair of wins on the diving board, recording scores of 309.30 (3-meter) and 282.00 (1-meter).
  • Fellow freshman Luigi Termine swam a time of 52.10 to earn a victory in the 100-backstroke. The first-year swimmer was joined by Michael Pietrucha, Tommy White, and Zachary Titus in the 200-medley relay that finished with a second-place time of 1:37.29.
  • Maxwell Murray delivered a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1000-freestyle (9:33.54) and 500-freestyle (4:40.34), while Nicholas Nakaya swam times of 1:55.45 and 59.46 in the 200-IM and 100-breaststroke to place second in both events.
  • In the 100-butterfly Sophomore Alexander Behr touched the wall in a time of 50.65 to finish second.
  • St. Bonaventure ended Saturday's dual-meet with a second-place finish from the 200-freestyle relay team of Behr, Kyle Gluck, Griffin Witte, and Patrick Heldreth with a time of 1:25.95.
 
UP NEXT
The Bonnies will travel to the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships. This four-day competition will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 18.
