Box Score HONOLULU – The St. Bonaventure University softball team fell to Seattle, 12-9, in the season opener in Hawaii Friday evening.
Juanita Wolak collected three hits for the Bonnies while Madison Stewart also collected a pair of hits. Wolak, Brooke Bobbey and Olivia Moon each drove in a pair of runs for the Brown and White.
Seattle, playing its 11th game of the season and improving to 8-3, jumped out to an early 1-0 on a double down the right field line.
The Bonnies answered in the third, plating three runs on a walk, wild pitch and sacrifice fly.
Seattle, however, was quick to respond with seven runs in the bottom half of the third. An RBI single kicked off the scoring followed by a wild pitch, tying the game at 3-3. A double and home run pushed the Seattle lead to 6-3 before tacking on two more runs in the inning.
Bona battled right back into the contest in the top of the fourth when Wolak kickstarted a four-run inning with an RBI double, scoring Madison Stewart. Back-to-back walks forced in two more runs for the Bonnies, bringing the score to 8-6.
Moon registered her second sacrifice fly of the contest, bringing the Bonnies within one, 8-7, heading into the later stages of the game.
Seattle added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs on an error and brought two more runs home on a double down the left field line.
The Bonnies looked to rally in the top of the seventh when Wolak singled to right field, plating Tess Spangenburg. Shannon Costello reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Reanna Perkins and making the score 12-9.
The Bonnies could not get closer, though, as Seattle held on to preserve the win.
Emily Phelan earned the opening day start for the Bonnies, working 2.2 innings and striking out a pair of batter. Freshman Kayla Ziemke tossed 2.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits, while Elizabeth Lis finished the final 0.2 innings, striking out two.
The two teams renew acquaintances Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
