Men's Swimming and Diving Hosts Niagara in Home Opener

10/4/2024 12:32:00 PM

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's swimming and diving team begins the home slate of the 2024-25 schedule Saturday. Little Three rival Niagara visits the Reilly Center Pool for 10:00 a.m. diving and 1:00 p.m. swimming.

LAST TIME OUT
The Bonnies boasted multiple outstanding individual efforts in the season-opening meet at Youngstown State despite a 152.5-147.5 team loss.

Diver Ben Giera earned a bid to NCAA Zones, posting a score of 340.5 in the 3-meter dive.

Senior Henry Wilkes and freshman Mark Mizsei also had impressive outings in the season-opener, posting two individual wins each. Wilkes claimed victory in the 100 and 200-backstroke while Mizsei finished first in the 200-fly and the 500-free.

ATLANTIC 10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Mizsei was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for his efforts at YSU. The freshman has the fastest times by a rookie in the 200-fly and 500-free in the A-10 this season. He touched the wall in 1:51.40 in the 200-butterfly and 4:46.71 in the 500-free..

PRESEASON POLL
St. Bonaventure was selected to finish second in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches' Poll. This is their highest preseason ranking since 2016 when they were picked to finish T-2 with George Washington.

JOSEPH R. MURPHY RECORD BOARD
Prior to Saturday's meet, the program will hold a special ceremony to dedicate the new record board in the Reilly Center Pool named for Joe Murphy.

Joe Murphy was a 2000 graduate and four-year letterwinner for the men's swim team serving as captain his senior year. During his time as a Bonnie, Joe specialized in the sprint free and fly events and was a multiple event Atlantic 10 Champion and former school record holder.

Following his graduation from St. Bonaventure, Joe returned to Buffalo and began a career at KeyBank and became a father to Finn and Ella. Over the years, Joe became increasingly involved in several non-profit organizations and charities throughout the Buffalo area and was widely known for his generosity. Tragically, Joe Murphy passed away on Feb. 13, 2019.

The same philanthropic spirit that Joe possessed has now been reciprocated through donations collected from teammates, classmates, friends, co-workers, and his Buffalo Leadership Class, towards the Joe Murphy Memorial Record Board that will be displayed in the Reilly Center Pool.
