WASHINGTON, D.C. – St. Bonaventure freshman Brendan Chapple has made a bit of school history - again - by becoming the first Atlantic 10 indoor track Rookie of the Week, men's or women's, in program history.
Chapple earns the league's top rookie honors following an impressive regular season that saw him cap off the final tune-up for conference championships by setting a second school record in as many weeks.
The Ontario native posted a new Bonnies-best time in the 1000 meters at Nazareth last Friday night, also winning the event. His time of 2:32.91 put him at the top of the podium and the school record book, easily surpassing the old Bona's record of 2:35.79.
He returned to action the next day at Cornell as he recorded another strong time in the mile. He clocked in at 4:27.87 and finished 13th in the event out of 49 competitors.
Chapple already established himself as a history-maker for the program a week prior as he broke the oldest standing school record in the department for any sport. The first-year runner timed in at 4:17.94 in the mile Feb. 10 at the SPIRE Collegiate Indoor Games to break a 97-year old mark that had stood for SBU since 1927.
Bona's indoor program officially joined the A-10 ranks for the first time in 2020.
He will next race in the Atlantic 10 Championships with the rest of Bona's A-10 qualifiers Friday and Saturday in Virginia Beach.
