Men's soccer gets first win of season, 2-1 over GW

Oct. 15, 2006

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Freshman Samuel Maheu scored 46 seconds into overtime to give St. Bonaventure's men's soccer team a 2-1 win over George Washington on Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.

It was St. Bonaventure's first win of the season (1-10-2). It also increased the Bonnies' Atlantic 10 Conference point total to five with a 1-2-2 record.

All-Conference senior midfielder Kevin Omokhua set up Maheu for the winning score, threading a back pass by a Colonial defender. Maheu directed the ball to the far left corner of the net, past outstretched GW keeper Matt Scheer.

"Our results are starting to validate the way we've been playing," said Bonnies coach Mel Mahler. "We are proving that we can be competitive in the conference and I'm happy to see it pay off for our guys."

The Bonnies appeared on their way to a win in regulation only to surrender a goal with exactly 1:00 left in the second half. Joe Siegel re-directed a free kick by Erick Perez-Segnini past Bonnies junior goalkeeper Ken Lish to knot the score at 1-1.

The overtime was St. Bonaventure's fifth of the year and third straight OT game at home.

The teams played over 78 minutes without a score until St. Bonaventure took a 1-0 lead with 11:50 left in the game. Junior forward Jon Lopez headed in a crossing pass from Omokhua.

Lish kept the Bonnies ahead when he made a brilliant stop on a penalty kick by David Leon with just under 9:00 left in regulation. Leon shot to the lower left and Lish dove to his right to get a hand on the ball.

Lish made three saves on the day while Scheer also made three stops. GW held a 10-9 edge in shots.

The Bonnies' next game is Friday, Oct. 20, at Richmond. Match time is 7:00.
