WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington (8-6-2; 6-2 Atlantic 10) scored two first-half goals en route to a 3-0 shutout win over the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (4-11-3; 0-6-2 A-10) Friday afternoon.
The win clinched a spot in the A-10 Championship for the Colonials, and moved them into first place in the conference standings. The loss extends St. Bonaventure's winless streak to nine straight as the team is 0-6-3 over that stretch.
GW converted a penalty kick in the 13th minute, and Tyler Ranalli scored his first goal of the season in the 35th minute to pace the Colonials to a 2-0 halftime lead. Yoni Berhanu – who scored the penalty kick – pounded home a rebounded attempt on yet another GW penalty kick in the 74th minute following a save on the initial shot.
"First off I'd like to congratulate GW for making the A-10 tournament and to retiring head coach George Lister for having an opportunity to make a run for the A-10 championship in his final year," St. Bona head coach Mel Mahler said of his counterpart who will be retiring on Sunday and has earned 199 career wins.
"Giving up PKs is another example of our youth and inexperience," Mahler continued. "But at the same time, our youth and inexperience played well against a first-place team, especially in the second half. That is something that we can build on in the future."
Brendan Lafferty needed to make just one save to preserve GW's fourth straight home shutout as the Bonnies attempted 12 shots. At the other end of the pitch, freshman keeper Bobby Diaz made his second consecutive start in net for the Bonnies and stopped six shots.
St. Bonaventure will look to win its first conference game in its last try on Sunday when it heads to Richmond to battle the Spiders. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in the season finale.
Game Notes: GW out-cornered Bonaventure, 4-3 … the Colonials also outshot the Bonnies, 16-12 … Bona's was whistled for offsides five times.
