Vanino Shines, Bonnies Beat UMass

AMHERST, MASS. – Daniel Iannacito would score the game winning goal and Brad Vanino added the insurance as the duo would combine for three goals, helping the Bonnies (5-11, 3-3) to defeat UMass (5-8-2, 2-4) by a score of 4-1 Friday afternoon.

St. Bonaventure junior forward James Reed would get the scoring started early in this one. In the 5th minute, Brad Beaumont found Reed on a breakaway who beat the keeper one on one for his second score of the season, giving the Bonnies a 1-0 lead.

The lead would not last for long. Just under eight minutes later, UMass' Dominic Skrajewski made a long pass up the field to Brett Canepa who fired a line drive over walk-on goalkeeper Abel Bautista's head to even the score.

The scoring in the first half was not done just yet. The Bonnies' ever-steady man in the middle Andrew Derayeh found junior midfielder Daniel Iannacito in the box.  Iannacito beat UMass goalkeeper Brian Frame in front of the goal for his second tally of the season, giving the SBU a 2-1 lead with just 11 minutes remaining in the first half.

The score at the half would hold a 2-1. UMass outshot the Bonnies 7-3 in the first half. Two yellow cards would be handed out in the first frame as well.

The second half would be the Brad Vanino show. In the 67th minute Vanino broke free in the box. Iannacito sent a cross that would find the head of Vanino who managed to spin home his first goal of the day and fifth of the season.

Under one minute later, Vanino found himself open in the box and fired home his second score of the day. The Sinking Spring, Pa. native had just three career goals coming into the 2012 campaign. He now has a team high six goals this season and nine total for his career. Combine those six goals with four assists and Vanino has 16 points this year.

The final score would stand at 4-1, giving the Bonnies their second win in their last three games. SBU was outshot 14-8 in the game. The Brown and White is now 4-6 when they are outshot by their opponent.

"I'm happy for the boys" head coach Mel Mahler said after the game. "It was a great road win. I was impressed with everyone's focus and determination from the first to last whistle. We're anxious for Sunday's match."

With his two scores on Friday, Vanino jumps into a four-way tie for 18th on the St. Bonaventure all-time scoring list with 30 points. Vanino's teammate Emmett O'Connor is in sole possession of 12th on the list with 37 career points. O'Connor is third on the all-time assists list with 19.

With the win SBU has nine points in Atlantic 10 play which temporarily jumps them into sole possession of sixth place. The Bonnies need to finish in the top eight to advance to the A-10 Tournament in Charlotte.

Abel Bautista made five saves in the win. Bautista has played a big role in the turnaround this season for the Bonnies. After starting out the season 0-6, having been outscored 25-3, the Bonnies have gone 5-5 over their last 10 games.

SBU has now scored four goals twice in less than three week. Prior to the Bonnies' 4-2 win over Saint Joseph's on Oct. 7, SBU had not scored four goals in a game since Oct. 27, 2006.

The Bonnies will be back in action on Sunday at Rhode Island. The Rams are currently on a three game losing streak heading into their Friday matchup with Duquesne. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
