@BonniesSoftball drops both games of Saturday doubleheader

HAMPTON, Va. ― The St. Bonaventure softball team (2-15) lost both games of a doubleheader in the Lady Pirates Classic 9-2 to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils (4-3) and 1-0 to the Hampton Lady Pirates (6-7) at Lady Pirates Stadium Saturday afternoon.  

In the first game, against Central Connecticut State, the Bonnies opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after designated hitter Kelli Rohan scored on a single to left center field hit by third baseman Grace Rooney.

In the top of the second, the Blue Devils tied the game after first baseman Kenya McVey reached home on a wild pitch. Central Connecticut State took the lead with a right field single hit by second baseman Arielle Bruno that brought home right fielder Ashley Black.

In the top of the third, McVey doubled to left center field, scoring pinch runner Sami Duffy. Later in the inning, third baseman Alexis Debrosse homered to left center field, bringing home McVey and shortstop Eileen Purcell.

The Blue Devils added three more runs in the top of the fourth with outfielder Kat Malcolm scoring after Duffy reached first on a fielding error committed by St. Bonaventure shortstop Emily McDonough. Later, Debrosse batted in Purcell and Duffy with a right field single.

The Bonnies added a run in the bottom of the fifth when center fielder Ashley Snider scored on a ground out to by pinch runner Christine Watson.

Central Connecticut State starting pitcher Laura Messina pitched three innings, holding the Bonnies to two hits while allowing an earned run and zero walks to go with seven strikeouts. In relief, Julie Marks allowed an earned run, two hits and two walks and recorded five strikeouts in four innings.

St. Bonaventure starter Carly Bilchak pitched two and one-third innings, allowing two walks, six earned runs and eight hits. Alexis Sloat allowed a walk, two hits and three runs, one earned, in four and two-thirds innings of work.

Debrosse led the Blue Devils at the plate, hitting three-for-four, scoring two runs and recording five RBI. Four Bonnies recorded hits in the contest: Rohan, McDonough, Rooney and Snider.

The Blue Devils finished the game with 10 hits. The Bonnies recorded four hits and committed two errors in the contest.

In the second game, against Hampton, the Lady Pirates scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth after shortstop Margaret Wilkins flew out to center field, bringing home catcher McKalee Rouse.

Hampton starting pitcher Jailynn Jackson threw a complete game, recording 10 strikeouts while allowing two hits and four walks.

St. Bonaventure starting pitcher Kristen Hickling also threw a complete game, allowing an earned run and five hits and recording a strikeout.

At the plate, Hampton second baseman Danielle Budden went two-for-three. McDonough and infielder Kelly Farrell recorded hits for the Brown and White.  

Hampton finished the game with five hits and an error. St. Bonaventure recorded two hits, committed two errors and left seven runners on base in the contest.

The Bonnies will conclude their games in the Lady Pirates Classic with a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m. against Central Connecticut State followed by rescheduled contest from Friday morning with Drexel (3-6).
