Box Score 2 HAMPTON, Va. ― The St. Bonaventure softball team (3-16) earned a split in a doubleheader that concluded their games in the Lady Pirates Classic on Sunday. The Bonnies rebounded from a 6-0 loss to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils (5-3) early in the day to defeat the Drexel Dragons (3-7) 3-0 in their second contest at Lady Pirates Stadium.
In the first game, against Central Connecticut State, the Blue Devils scored the contest's first runs in the bottom of the first inning on a double hit by infielder Evie Rentzel that brought home center fielder Kat Malcolm and second baseman Arielle Bruno.
Central Connecticut State added to its lead in the bottom of the third after designated hitter Sarah Drazin, Rentzel and Malcolm reached home on a double hit by first baseman Kenya McVey. Later, McVey scored after catcher Hannah Cooper reached first on a St. Bonaventure infield error, making the score 6-0, Blue Devils.
Blue Devils starting pitcher Laura Messina earned the victory, recording five strikeouts and allowing three hits, a walk and zero runs in four innings. In three innings in relief, Sarah Gaalswijk struck out three batters and allowed zero runs, zero hits and zero walks.
In a losing effort, St. Bonaventure starting pitcher Julia Pratt threw a complete game, striking out a batter and allowing two walks, seven hits and six runs, three unearned.
Rentzel and Malcolm each recorded two hits for Central Connecticut State and McVey batted in three runners.
First baseman Katie Sinclair, shortstop Emily McDonough and second baseman Desiree Gonzalez recorded hits for the Bonnies.
Central Connecticut State finished the game with seven hits and an error. St. Bonaventure recorded three hits, committed four errors and left five runners on base in the contest.
In the second game, against Drexel, the Brown and White scored twice in the top of the first on a single hit by third baseman Grace Rooney that drove in right fielder Kelli Rohan and on another single hit by designated hitter Christine Watson that brought Rooney home.
St. Bonaventure added to its lead in the top of the second after infielder Emily Belfield scored on a Rohan single.
Bonnies starting pitcher Kristen Hickling pitched a complete game, recording three strikeouts and allowing zero runs, two walks and four hits.
Dragons starting pitcher Taylor Lee took the loss in the contest, allowing two earned runs, three hits and recording a strikeout in one inning of work. Rose Portiolli allowed a run and two hits in a third of an inning. Tara Konopka pitched five and two-thirds innings in relief, recording two strikeouts and allowing four hits, zero walks and zero runs.
Rohan and Watson led the Bonnies at plate, recording three hits and two hits, respectively. Infielder Baeley Reed, outfielder Shelby Taylor, infielder Sylvia Llamas and outfielder Comfort Ahonkhai recorded hits for the Dragons.
St. Bonaventure recorded nine hits in the game. Drexel recorded four hits, committed an error and left seven runners on base in the contest.
The Bonnies will return to action March 22 when they open Atlantic 10 Conference play with a doubleheader against La Salle (3-7) at West Campus Field in Philadelphia.
