Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The Dayton Flyers came out on top over the St. Bonaventure University softball team, 5-0, Sunday afternoon to complete a sweep of the weekend series over the Bonnies.
Freshman Sam Wood made her first career start in the circle for the Bonnies and gave her team four shutout innings to help St. Bonaventure keep pace.
The Bonnies' best offensive chance came in the top of the second as Alissa Karjel doubled to right center with two away, but she was left stranded.
Wood and the Bona defense left six Flyers stranded into the fifth inning, but Dayton successfully brought its runners across in the inning as UD strung together three hits and capitalized on a Bona fielding error for three runs.
After Dayton added a pair to grab a 5-0 lead in the sixth, the Bonnies rallied in their last at-bats of the game in the seventh.
Morgan Phillips and Alissa Karjel worked back-to-back singles, and a Kiera Lorenzo walk loaded the bases with one out. But the Flyers worked a strikeout and a pop out to leave the bases loaded and earn the shutout victory.
Wood tossed all six innings for the Bonnies, which is a new career high for the Freshman.
Up next, the Bonnies will host Little Three rival Niagara for a doubleheader on Wednesday. Game times are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
