Men's Track Opens Indoor Season Strong at Houghton Invite

1/22/2023 12:55:00 AM

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Clay Peets crushed the previous school record in the 3000 meters as part of an impressive first day of indoor season for the St. Bonaventure men's track team Saturday afternoon at the Houghton Invitational.

Peets picked up where he left off following a strong cross country season last fall, posting the winning time in the 3000. He beat out 34 other runners, clearing the rest of the field by nearly two seconds with a mark of 8:45.82.

His run easily eclipsed the previous school record mark of 9:27.81 set in 2020.

Both Colin McCarthy (9:20.47) and Darion Gregory (9:25.15) broke the existing Bonnies school record as well, finishing ninth and 11th respectively in the event.

A pair of Bonnies freshmen impressed in the mile, finishing second and third overall as Alex Ryan (4:33.62) checked in second out of 44 runners and just ahead of teammate and third-place finisher Aiden Scattergood (4:33.90). Those times also stand second and third respectively in program history with only the 1927 time set by Gus Moore (4:19.6) ahead. Darion Gregory (4:42.38) gave the Bonnies another top-five finisher as the senior timed in fifth in the race.

Scattergood also made a dent in the program record book at the 800 meters. He placed third in the race Saturday with a time of 2:04.54, just off the winning time of 2:02.53. That will place him second in the Bona record books while fellow freshman Christian Figueroa slots in third after an eighth-place finish on Saturday with an effort of 2:06.31.

St. Bonaventure is back in action in two weeks at the Brockport Multis Feb. 4.
