BUFFALO – The St. Bonaventure men's track team battled cold and windy conditions Saturday at the UB Alumni Invitational.
As a team, the Bonnies placed third out of nine teams with 72 team points.
Freshman William McCarthy set a new program record in the 3000-meter steeplechase as he clocked in at 9:43.65 to win Saturday's race. He beat his previous PR by nearly three seconds and overtook the previous Bona's program record of 9:45.03 set by Darion Gregory in the same meet last spring.
The Bonnies had a standout 5K as the team took the top three spots among athletes competing for collegiate teams.
Clay Peets made his return to individual competition after missing the indoor season due to injury and posted a time of 14:56.96, just off the winning time of 14:39.16 set by an unattached runner. Aiden Scattergood (15:11.53) and Zane Courtwright (15:18.21) took the next two spots for the Bonnies, each running new top-five times in the program record book.
Bona's 4x400 relay team of Riley Dillon, Kieran Ryan, Aidan Hurley and Christian Figueroa was the top-finishing college squad as well at 3:32.73, just off the school record of 3:30.79 and behind only the UB Run Club's time of 3:31.96.
Following the meet, the Bonnies honored their graduating seniors: Zane Courtwright, Brian Gleason, Kieran Ryan and Henry Trost.
The Bonnies have one more tune-up remaining before Atlantic 10 Championships as they head to Loretto, Pa. for the Saint Francis Red Flash Open next Saturday.
