ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Bonnies junior Aiden Scattergood cleared the rest of the field by nearly 25 seconds to take the win in Saturday's Yellowjacket Invitational, showing the way in a dominating performance for the St. Bonaventure cross country team on a sunny and warm morning at Genesee Valley Park.
Scattergood scored the first meet victory of his collegiate career by running the 8K course in a time of 25:26.2. The closest competitor in the field of 261 runners was James Catania of Rochester who ran his home course in 25:51.6. A trio of Colgate runners – John Griffith (25:55), Owen McMorrow (25:58) and Owen Holland (26:01) and Buffalo's Ty Fluharty (26:10) were the next four runners in line.
As a team, the Bonnies placed fifth out of the 20 squads in attendance with 170 points. Colgate showed the way with 32 points, ahead of Buffalo's 94.
Fellow junior Casey Malloy took the top team finish of his Bonnies career as he was second across the stripe for the Brown and White with his effort of 27:02.8, good for 27th overall in the competitive field. Sophomores William McCarthy (27:25.9) and Brendan Chapple (27:41.2) were next in line for the Bonnies while freshman Nathan Sikorski rounded out the team top five at 27:57.
Freshmen Aiden Konetsky (28:08.1) and Sam Tomm (28:10.7) completed the team's top seven in their first collegiate 8K meet.
Scattergood's victory is the first meet win by a Bonnies runner since Clay Peets won last year's season-opening Little Three Championship. Peets was also the top-finishing attached team runner in last year's Gettysburg Invitational, finishing third overall that day. Otherwise, it is the first meet win by a Bonnies men's runner in a full field event in over a decade.Â
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"This race was a learning curve for most of our runners today. They need to focus on what they learned from this race and how they can improve next week at Lock Haven. Every race is a step forward and we as coaches will have specific aspects to refine as we keep working."
"Aiden Scattergood showed that he was the best in the field today. He led the entire race without ever looking back with a 25-second lead throughout the entire race. He had a very impressive performance and we're proud of his result today."
