ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's track team showed well in multiple events as part of the Nazareth Challenge Cup Saturday afternoon.
The 3000 meters was one of the highlights of the day for the Bonnies as several members of the team turned in new PR marks. Senior Casey Malloy showed the way as he timed in fifth out of 46 runners with a mark of 8:52.13, good for fifth individually in school history and easily better than his previous best of 9:05. Sophomore Layne Haught also registered a top-10 program time of 9:08.13, placing 10th in Saturday's field.
Freshman Cameron Ogletree shined in the 60-meter sprint as he clocked in with a time of 7.30, good enough to top his previous best of 7.35 to re-set a new school record in the brief history of Bonnies sprints. He finished fourth in the event Saturday, just off the open event's winning time of 7.26 set by Rochester's Ray Watkins. Fellow freshman Ben Dillon improved his program top time in the 60-meter hurdles as well (10.14).
Christian Figueroa placed 15th out of 65 competitors in the 400 meters with a run of 51.12. He also led the team and finished eighth out of 58 runners in the 200 later in the afternoon with an effort of 23.21.
Also in the 200, Kohler Preston (23.52) and Ogletree (24.00) posted new personal bests.
In the mile, Malloy paced the squad again with the personal best time of 4:28.79, moving to ninth individually in school history.
The 4x400 relay team of Figueroa, Kieran Maguire, Aidan Hurley and Preston also timed in at 3:27.88 with the fastest 4x4 time for a Bonnies team since 1974.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"The men's team traveled to Nazareth College and had a very successful day. We had 16 different guys hit personal bests, which says a lot about their commitment. Credit to the entire team for staying dedicated to training despite the weather not being conducive to running outside — the treadmill has definitely become their personal friend. They've also made great use of Butler Gym for drills and plyometrics, and it's paying off. The relays are starting to come together, and we're finding the right niches as we move forward."
"I also want to give a shout-out to Casey Malloy, Aiden Hurley and freshman Kieran Maguire for their continued progression across multiple events and for finding where they can be most successful. Layne Haught continues to improve in the 3K at every meet, showing great consistency. Much credit also goes to freshman Joey Caruso, who runs both the 3K and 5K at every meet in preparation to tackle the 10K in the outdoor season — that kind of dedication is impressive for a first-year athlete."
