Chapple Breaks Bona's Oldest School Record, Takes Down Nearly Century-Old Mile Mark

GENEVA, Ohio – Freshman Brendan Chapple broke St. Bonaventure's oldest existing school record – in any sport – with a new top mile time Saturday afternoon for the Bonnies men's track team at the SPIRE Collegiate Indoor Games.

Chapple timed in at 4:17.94 on Saturday to surpass the existing school indoor record of 4:19.6 which had stood for nearly a century. Gus Moore held the record with his time set 97 years ago at the 1927 Millrose Games in New York City.

A first-year student-athlete at St. Bonaventure from Waterloo, Ontario, Chapple previously stood fourth in the Bona record book with a time of 4:21.24 set just a week ago at Youngstown State. In Saturday's race, Chapple finished ninth out of 87 competitors.

Senior Zane Courtwright nearly broke the old school record as well as he placed 11th in the race with a run of 4:20.07, good for another personal best.

Sophomore James Hoffman (2:03.04) and freshman Brennan Cockrell (2:03.67) ran new program top-10 individual times in the 800 while senior Kieran Ryan had the team's top time of the day in the event (2:01.25).

Freshman William McCarthy PR'ed in the 3000 meters as his time of 8:54.61 gives him a new third-best individual mark on the school leaderboard. Freshman Lucas Catarella (9:19.52) also ran a new top-10 program time.

Members of the team also competed at RIT on Friday night.

The standout event Friday was the 1000 meters where the Bonnies took the top two finishing spots and three of the first four. Joshua Lopez delivered the winning time of 2:40.07, just ahead of teammate James Fitzmaurice who clocked in at 2:40.28. Brecken Riley (2:43.03) was fourth with a new PR.

The Bonnies are back in competition again with split squad action next week with part of the team competing at the Nazareth Conference Tune-Up Meet Friday night and the rest of the team taking part in the Denault Invitational at Cornell on Saturday.
