Outdoor Track Season Opens With New Bona's Records

GENESEO, N.Y. – Two new school records highlighted the first outdoor track competition of the spring for the St. Bonaventure men's track team on a soggy day in the Southern Tier.

Junior Christian Figueroa set a new school record in the 400 meters by crossing the finish line in 50.03, good enough to surpass the standing record set a year ago by Riley Dillon of 50.83. Figueroa's previous PR from last season was 50.93. He placed second out of 20 competitors in Saturday's race.

Sophomore Henry Morris gave the Bonnies another new school record in the 400 hurdles as he clocked in at 57.57. That effort easily broke his own record of 59.20 posted last spring as he also ran second in Saturday's event.

In the 5000 meters, the Bonnies took the top three spots.

Casey Malloy won the race by nearly five seconds with a winning time of 15:28.39, beating his teammate William McCarthy (15:33.37) to the line. Ethan Luce placed third at 15:35.97.

All three of those 5K runners moved into the top-10 on the program records list, slotting fifth through seventh. Colin McCarthy also PR'ed (15:46.26) to move up in the record book as well.

Clay Peets also ran the 10K for the first time in outdoor track, moving to second in the program record book with his time of 32:46.

Brendan Chapple jumped to fourth individually for the school record book in the 800 as he timed in at 1:58.08.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"Coach Lonzi and myself are impressed with the athletes' efforts, noting that they've been working hard since the mid-term break. The opportunity to train on the Olean track has clearly paid off, as reflected in today's results. This marks a strong start to the season, with athletes now having a clearer focus on the events they need to concentrate on to qualify for the championship season."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies travel to two separate meets next weekend with much of the team heading to the Colonial Relays at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. while other athletes will compete in the Geneseo Early Spring Invite next Saturday.
