GENEVA, Ohio – St. Bonaventure's men's track team set four new indoor school records with the first competition of the semester Saturday at the SPIRE Midwest Open held inside the SPIRE Institute.

Sophomore Brendan Chapple crushed the Bonnies record in the 800 meters and he won Saturday's race with his run of 1:55.93, easily surpassing second-place Mike Hvizdos of John Carroll who was behind at 1:56.84 in the field of 79 competitors. With his effort, Chapple broke the existing Bona record of 1:57.95 by Zach Buckner which had stood since the 2022 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships.

Fellow sophomore Ryan Umiker also turned in a new top-10 school time in the 800 at 2:03.14.

Junior Ethan Luce established another school record in the 5000 meters and he crossed the finish line in 15:39.62, just ahead of classmate Casey Malloy who also broke the existing school record as he timed in at 15:39.80. Both runners eclipsed the previous school-best mark of 15:48.79 set by Luce two years ago at A-10 Championships.

Senior Clay Peets gave the Bonnies another school record and event victory in the 3000 meters.

In his first competition of the year after taking a gap semester in the fall, Peets dominated the race as he won in the field of over 70 runners by more than five full seconds with a winning time of 8:23.47. He easily jumped to the top of the board in school history as he broke the record of 8:32.64 set at last year's conference championship meet by Zane Courtwright and also smashed his old PR by 12 seconds.

Junior Aiden Scattergood finished eighth in Saturday's 3000 race at 8:35.90, remaining third in the school records list with a time that is nearly seven seconds better than his previous PR. Senior Drew Carlson (9:05.68) posted a new individual best which will stand top-five in the school record list as well.

The distance medley relay team of Chapple, Peets, McCarthy, Aidan Hurley and Christian Figueroa also scorched another school record of 10:18.71, easily breaking the previous mark of 11:01.26.

Scattergood added to his impressive day as he ran one of the top indoor mile times in school history when he clocked in at 4:18.65. He finished fifth out of 100 competitors in Saturday's event and his time was good for second in school history, just behind teammate Brendan Chapple who broke Bonaventure's oldest standing record in any sport last year when he timed in at 4:17.94 to break the record of 4:19.6 held since 1927 by Gus Moore.

Freshman Nathan Sikorski crossed the finish line with a mile time of 4:29.96 which will be seventh individually in school history. Aiden Holt was third in the event for the Bonnies (4:36.17) while Joshua Lopez set a new PR of 4:36.97.

The Bonnies showed strong in the 400 as well as Riley Dillon placed 13th out of 75 runners as he posted a time of 51.24. He was just two spots ahead of teammate Christian Figueroa who PR'ed with his effort of 51.27, second individually in program history behind only Dillon's school record. Henry Morris also registered a new PR of 53.12, jumping to third in the program record book. Matthew Ryan, too, posted a new Bonnies individual top-10 time in the event of 54.94.

St. Bonaventure heads back to Ohio next weekend for the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invitational Friday and Saturday.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"The team made impressive strides, showcasing both individual and collective growth. We compare their times from last year at this time and most our our athletes that ran this event last year were significantly better today. Our freshmen also made great gains from the first meet last month. We give the athletes credit for their dedication of running their workouts on their own over the holiday break of five weeks. It shows they are committed to individual and team success. The weather hasn't been conducive to quality workouts but they didn't let that hinder their development."
