Enrique Barrera was the driving force behind the origin of the varsity men’s soccer program at St. Bonaventure as well as its rise to a legitimate Division I program competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Freely giving his time and resources, he served as head coach for 17 seasons from 1972-88. A disciplined, dedicated coach and mentor to student-athletes who became fiercely loyal to him, Barrera’s teams won 103 games including a still-record 12 victories in the fall of 1982.

In the mid-1980s, his teams were routinely ranked among the best in New York State. He also served the University as a Professor of Modern Languages for 42 years, retiring in 1994.

He passed away in 2017 at the age of 92.
