John was one of the best punters in Eastern collegiate football. He developed a passing and running ability to a point where he came to be regarded as a triple threat man. His accurate toe pulled his team from many a ticklish situation and his passing and running helped them to many a substantial gain.
His football career spanned four seasons (1928-32). In 1930, he was named to the nation's Little All-American Team. He was also named to the Little Three All-Star Team the same year.
After graduation, John moved into the professional ranks where he played with the then Pittsburgh Pirates and later for the New York Giants.
