Parkes excelled in men’s swimming and earned the Letterman of the Year (1982) and the John B. Skehan Award (1983). In addition, he was the 1983 Male Athlete of the Year.

He qualified for the World Games in the 200 yard backtstroke (1982), and was the first St. Bonaventure swimmer to compete as an individual in the U.S. National Championships. Parkes competed in the 200 yard backstroke (1982-1983).

The winner of 28 and 31 dual meet races, he earned All-East honors at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships.

He set 27 pool records, and was one of the most decorated swimmers in St. Bonaventure University history.
