Rev. Krieger was appointed director of athletics (1941-1948) where he developed the programs for which St. Bonaventure reached national prominence under famed football coach Hugh Devore, also was the founder of the Gridiron Club (1946).

Notably, he supervised the construction of Forness Stadium, which had a capacity of 14,500 and is where the present University administration building now stands.

He also served as head coach of the basketball team (1944-1946), posting a winning record of 15-10 in two seasons.

Fr. Anselm was an All-American basketball player at Providence College.
